A Florida high school senior girl is considering herself very lucky after she barely missed being completely blind in one eye. She had apparently got a parasite in her eye which grew and ate through her eye. The parasite is believed to have grown on the contact lens.
The 18 years old school girl, Ashley Hyde got this acanthamoeba infection after she failed to change her contact lens on a regular basis.
When she first contacted the doctors, they were bewildered by the state of the eye. The eyes were pink, the vision was blurred and the area had inflammation.
So they had no option but to take scrapings from the eye which was done by drilling into the eye.
These scrape finally told the doctors about the parasite which is generally found in water and soil.
"They did multiple cultures where they scrape your eye. One time, they had to drill into my eye. It was really nasty," Hyde told.
